The more appropriate technique for what I'm guessing you want to do, is to duplicate the square. Would you mind explaining why you want the gradient to be separate from the object it's filling?

If you want the gradient to move separately from the square, you need to disengage a button on the Selection tool control bar. I guess ianv01 posted his question in someone else's message Oh wait! Either View menu > Swatches, to open the swatches dialog or change the palette to Auto (a tiny triangle at the right end of the current palette will open a menu of all the palettes that are installed with Inkscape, including the Auto palette).
